Exodus uses a bridge expansion symbol. It is the first set where symbol color encodes rarity (black common, silver uncommon, gold rare) — Stronghold and earlier stay monochrome.

Lookalikes & traps

Tempest-block bridges and Weatherlight-era silhouettes get mixed in binders. Exodus is specifically the color-coded bridge with set context from June 1998; do not assume every bridge-looking mark is EXO.

Confirm after the icon

Confirm set code EXO and the early collector-number line Exodus also pioneered. Color on the bridge is meaningful here; on Stronghold it is not.

How to identify Exodus cards

  1. 1

Match the bridge glyph to Exodus — this is the rarity-color transition set, not a generic Rath-block icon.

  2. 2

Read black / silver / gold on the bridge for common / uncommon / rare; there is no mythic orange in 1998.

  3. 3

Do not import Exodus color rules onto Stronghold or earlier monochrome symbols.

  4. 4

Verify EXO + collector number, or scan with Tappr when Tempest-block cards share a binder pile.

Rarity by symbol color

Exodus introduced color-coded rarity: black common, silver uncommon, gold rare. Mythic orange does not exist yet. Pre-Exodus symbols (through Stronghold) were generally black regardless of rarity.

Common Black (white in rare exceptions)
Uncommon Silver symbol
Rare Gold symbol
Mythic Rare Orange / bronze (post-Alara)

Legend shows the modern post-Exodus palette. Pre-Exodus sets and special rarities (for example Time Spiral purple timeshifted) follow the rarity reading above — not this swatch row alone.

FAQ

Was Exodus the first color-coded set symbol?

Yes. Starting with Exodus (1998), expansion-symbol color indicates rarity. Stronghold and earlier expansions used monochrome symbols that do not reveal rarity by color.

What is the Exodus set code?

EXO. It appears with the collector number on the information line Exodus helped popularize.

Does Exodus have mythic rares?

No. Mythic rarity and the orange symbol arrive with Shards of Alara (2008). Exodus stops at gold rares.

How do I identify an Exodus card quickly?

Bridge icon → black/silver/gold rarity → EXO + number. Scan with Tappr if a Tempest-block listing title is vague.
