Which MTG Card Scanner to Use
What “best” depends on
Pages that rank Magic scanners with numeric scores answer a real query — which app for which job — and then invent a winner. This page keeps the decision table and drops the scores. It is not an accuracy ranking. Platform and job come from each product’s public listing or site, linked below. Try two apps on the same reprints in your own light before you switch a collection.
Choose by the job
| App | Where it runs | Job it describes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tappr | iPhone and Android | Identify a physical printing and read a Scryfall market estimate (about every 24 hours), then track the collection | Not a marketplace and not a deck lab. Confirm the printing. The figure is an estimate, not an in-stock offer. |
| ManaBox | iPhone, iPad, and Android | Scan, search offline, build and simulate decks, trade, and view several store price lists | The scanner FAQ says recognition is art-based, so shared-art reprints can need a manual set correction |
| Delver Lens | Android (Google Play) | Scan cards into a collection, check prices, build decks, and export | The iPhone app is a newer, separate listing (MTG Delver TCG Scanner), not the same Play Store binary |
| TCGplayer | Marketplace, plus its own app | Buy and sell on the US marketplace | Market price is recent sales. A listing’s asking price can differ. Tappr is not the seller. |
| Scryfall | Web | Look up a card you can already name, and read where prices come from | Not a camera scanner |
How to use the table
- Unknown cardboard in your hand. Use a scanner: Tappr, ManaBox, or Delver Lens on Android. Then confirm the printing with the set symbol and collector number. Photo identification also has its own page: Identify an MTG card.
- Decks, a simulator, and trades in one app. ManaBox’s App Store and Play listings describe that toolkit. The workflow comparison is ManaBox vs Tappr.
- Android collection scanning. Delver Lens’s Play listing is the Android scanner. See Tappr vs Delver Lens.
- Buying or selling. Open TCGplayer or Cardmarket after you know the printing. Tappr vs TCGplayer covers that split. A cash offer from a store is a buylist, explained on the Card Kingdom buylist guide.
- You already know the name. Use Scryfall or a name hub such as Lightning Bolt printings. Tappr vs Scryfall is the search-versus-scan note.
Tappr’s own scope, from the pricing page and the card pages: scanning and checking the market estimate are free on iPhone and Android; Pro adds set-completion tracking, collection analytics, and value history. Prices on the site are the Scryfall sync described in how to read a market price.
What this page leaves out on purpose
Other scanners exist, including a Dragon Shield comparison already on this site. Roundups also score newer iOS apps. Those scores are not repeated here. If a site publishes a 4-out-of-5 accuracy table without a public method, treat it as advertising.
