Current Era
The Magic of today. From Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty through the latest releases, the Current Era brings the newest Standard-legal sets and the Universes Beyond crossovers that expanded the game’s worlds.
Era Overview
The Current Era covers 2020 to the present — the sets that make up today’s Standard format and the most recent additions to every non-rotating format. It has been a period of rapid release and bold experimentation, including the introduction of Universes Beyond, which brings characters and worlds from outside Magic’s multiverse into the game. This era’s sets are the ones players are opening now, so they combine the freshest chase cards with the widest array of premium treatments: borderless, showcase, extended-art, and serialized versions all appear regularly. It is the most actively traded era, where prices move quickly around new releases and rotation.
History & Highlights
The era included pandemic-era releases like Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim, the university-themed Strixhaven, and the acclaimed Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, which fused cyberpunk with the plane’s samurai roots. The Phyrexian arc built across Dominaria United, The Brothers’ War, Phyrexia, and March of the Machine, delivering a multi-set story climax. Universes Beyond grew from a novelty into a major pillar, with crossovers such as The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth producing some of the most talked-about cards in the game’s history. Recent sets like Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor, and Bloomburrow continue the modern cadence of frequent, richly themed releases.

Format Context
The Current Era is the backbone of Standard, and its sets feed directly into Pioneer, Modern, and Commander as they release. Because these are the newest cards, they are the most liquid in the market and the most affected by rotation and banned-list updates. Scanning a current-era card is the best way to confirm both its up-to-the-minute legality across formats and its fast-moving price.
Common questions
01 What is Universes Beyond?
Universes Beyond is a product line that brings characters and settings from outside Magic — such as The Lord of the Rings — into the game as playable cards. It became a major pillar during the Current Era.
02 Which Current Era sets are Standard legal?
Standard includes the most recent sets within the rotation window, which changes each year. Scan a card with Tappr to confirm whether its set is currently Standard legal.
03 Why do Current Era card prices move so fast?
These are the newest cards, so their prices react quickly to new releases, tournament results, and rotation. Live pricing from a scan is the most reliable way to track their value.
04 What premium treatments appear in Current Era sets?
Modern sets feature borderless, showcase, extended-art, and serialized versions, which can be worth far more than the standard printing. Tappr identifies the exact treatment you scan.
