MTG Set Completion Strategy

7 min readUpdated 2026-08-01

Decide what “complete” means

A playset of commons, a raw set of one-of-each, and a foil master set are different projects with different budgets. Write down the definition before you buy singles.

Inventory before you spend

Scan what you already own into Tappr and use set completion tracking so you do not repurchase cards buried in another binder. Most completion budgets are wasted on duplicates people forgot they had.

Buy the boring cards first

Mythics get attention; commons and uncommons close sets. Filling cheap slots early makes the remaining sparse list obvious and prevents “almost done” syndrome where you stall on invisible gaps.

Respect print runs and treatments

Showcase and borderless slots can be their own mini-sets. If your goal is a standard frame set, do not accidentally spend master-set money on treatments you did not plan to chase.

Use live prices as a pace limit

When a missing rare spikes, wait or substitute with a later reprint if your completion rules allow it. Scanning keeps the want list honest against market reality.

Pair with checklists

Use scanmtg.com set checklists alongside the app so you can see the full set list while Tappr tracks what you have physically scanned.

FAQ

Common questions

01Is set completion a good investment?

Sometimes for sealed-era desirability, often not. Treat it as a collecting goal first; any appreciation is a bonus.

02Should I complete foil sets?

Only if you love the look and accept foil condition risk (curling, clouding). Foil masters are a premium hobby.

03How does Tappr help?

Scanning builds the inventory; set completion tracking shows remaining gaps without a spreadsheet.

04What about tokens and alt cards?

Define whether tokens, promos, and art variants count before you start buying.
