MTG Set Completion Strategy
Decide what “complete” means
A playset of commons, a raw set of one-of-each, and a foil master set are different projects with different budgets. Write down the definition before you buy singles.
Inventory before you spend
Scan what you already own into Tappr and use set completion tracking so you do not repurchase cards buried in another binder. Most completion budgets are wasted on duplicates people forgot they had.
Buy the boring cards first
Mythics get attention; commons and uncommons close sets. Filling cheap slots early makes the remaining sparse list obvious and prevents “almost done” syndrome where you stall on invisible gaps.
Respect print runs and treatments
Showcase and borderless slots can be their own mini-sets. If your goal is a standard frame set, do not accidentally spend master-set money on treatments you did not plan to chase.
Use live prices as a pace limit
When a missing rare spikes, wait or substitute with a later reprint if your completion rules allow it. Scanning keeps the want list honest against market reality.
