Triage first, research later

Do not alphabetize 5,000 commons on day one. Scan for hits: Reserved List cards, early dual lands, Power Nine, and anything that prices well above bulk. Set those aside for careful condition checks.

Watch for valuable eras

Older white-border and black-border cards, especially from early sets, deserve extra attention. Scanning tells printings apart so a modern reprint does not get mistaken for a vintage original.
