MTG Card Scanning Tips

6 min readUpdated 2026-08-01

Start with light, not software

Most failed Magic scans are lighting problems. Use bright, even, diffused light. Window light or a shaded overhead lamp beats a single harsh desk lamp. Foil cards need a slight tilt so the set symbol and collector number stay readable.

Keep the whole card in frame

Collector numbers live at the bottom. If you crop corners or cut off the bottom strip, the app has to guess the printing. Lay the card flat on a dark, plain background and hold the phone parallel to the card.

Sleeves and binders

Clear penny sleeves and binder pages usually work. Cloudy, scratched, or colored sleeves are harder. If recognition struggles, temporarily move the card to a clearer sleeve rather than forcing a bad angle.

Bulk rhythm

Sort into rough piles (foils, standard rares, bulk) so you are not constantly changing technique. Scan with a steady cadence — identify, confirm, next — instead of stopping to research every uncommon mid-flow. Use Tappr's collection list afterward to review high-value hits.

Foreign and old-border cards

Recognition leans on art and layout, so foreign printings can still resolve. Old-border cards are supported; give the camera a clean look at the set symbol region when printings share art across eras.

After the scan

Prices are live market signals sourced via Scryfall from TCGplayer and Cardmarket. Adjust for condition when you sell. For deeper product context, see the how to scan Magic cards guide and the free scanner landing.

FAQ

Common questions

01Why do foils fail more often?

Reflective surfaces create glare that hides the collector number. Tilt the card 10–15 degrees under diffuse light.

02Should I scan in a dark room?

No. Low light forces noisy photos. Add ambient light rather than relying on a harsh phone flash alone.

03Can I scan through top loaders?

Often yes, but hard plastic glare is common. Angle the loader or remove the card briefly for difficult foils.

04How fast can I scan a collection?

Once lighting is dialed in, scanning is seconds per card. Large collections are limited more by handling than by recognition.
